So apparently a stomach bug is going around, which we got to see first
hand. Lalo had a pretty awful week last week - he seemed overly
cranky, kept waking up screaming, and, believe it or not, was throwing
up more than normal, which for him means every 10 minutes. The newest
plan with his reflux is that our GI doctor is going to attempt to
place the GJ tube (another trip under anesthia!). Well things were
bad enough last week that I called our doctor on Wednesday to tell him
things were worse and hound him about getting us on the schedule.
Apparently, I must have sounded stressed in my message because he
called me back at 10pm to make sure things were okay. Then, on
Thrusday evening when I picked Caleb up from daycare, he didn't seem
himself. After not eating much and being super quiet all night we
decided to take his temp - 102.4...So when Lalo woke up a few hours
later screaming, we decided to take his temp - 102.2...uh oh! Friday
neither of the boys showed any symptoms other than the fever, but we
brought Lalo to the pediatrician. They ran a few tests, but
everything checked out okay. That was a little concerning since a
fever could indicate aspiration pnemonia, and we had no other symptoms
or positive results to tell us otherwise. But his lungs sounded clear
as could be, so we assumed it just was a bug and had instructions to
come back if his fever got worse or we heard any change in his lungs.
Sure enough, Caleb started throwing up in the middle of the night. So
we actually felt a little better knowing that it was a stomach bug.
And lucky for us, it moved quick. By Saturday night we were fever
free and Caleb was getting his appetite back. Sunday we were pretty
low key, but everyone seemed back to normal. And boy were we cocky,
thinking we totally did a fantastic job getting Lalo through his first
sickness...
Then Sunday night, a few hours after we went to sleep, Lalo started
coughing, and coughing, and coughing. You could hear him wheezing and
congested. We gave him an inhaler around 3 am and that seemed to help
enough to get him to sleep for a few hours. Caleb had only had a few
coughs here and there so we were completely paranoid that he had
aspirated. Luckily, the pediatrician thought his lungs actually
sounded pretty good considering. They ran tests for rsv and flu and
both came up negative, thank God! Aspiration is definitely on the
radar, but at this point she thinks it is just a virus (pretty likely
since Caleb is now coughing more). They gave him a nebulizer breathing
treatment in their office and sent us home to do 3 treatments a day.
So far, they do seem to help him get a little more comfortable. We
follow up tomorrow with the pediatrician. Hopefully, she agrees that
he sounds a little better. We still have our fingers crossed that
this doesn't get us admitted to Hopkins. So far, so good!
